The three-carbon line runs alongside it. It starts from a different compound, CBGVA, and it produces THCVA, CBDVA and CBCVA. Heat those and you get THCV, CBDV and CBCV. These are the varins.
Two carbons shorter. That's the only difference in the tail, and it's enough to change how the molecules interact with your body and enough to put them in a separate family with a separate starting material.
So THCVA isn't a modified THCA. It's THCA's counterpart on a parallel track. They're built at the same time by the same plant from two different raw materials, and they run in parallel rather than one becoming the other.
Does THCVA Get You High?
No. THCVA in its acid form is non-intoxicating, the same way THCA is.
The heated form, THCV, is a more complicated answer, and honesty is better than confidence here. THCV appears to interact with the same receptor THC works on, but not in the same way. Research suggests it may block that receptor at lower amounts and activate it at higher amounts, which is unusual and means its behavior isn't a simple "weaker THC" or "stronger THC" story.
What that translates to in a real product is not well established, and there's a practical reason it barely matters: the quantities of THCVA in cannabis are tiny. Does THCVA Count Toward the THC on Your Label?
No, and this is the most practically useful thing on this page.
Quick background on how potency labels work. Raw flower contains mostly THCA, not THC. So labels show a calculated figure called total THC, which estimates how much THC you'd end up with after heating. The industry formula is:
Total THC = THC + (0.877 × THCA)
That 0.877 isn't arbitrary. THCA weighs about 358 and THC weighs about 314, and 314 divided by 358 is 0.877. The missing 12 percent or so is the carbon dioxide that bubbles away when the molecule decarboxylates. You're not losing potency, you're losing weight that was never THC in the first place.
Now, THCVA and THCV are not part of that calculation. They're reported separately when a lab tests for them at all, and they don't get folded into the total THC number on your label.
There's a neat chemical reason the same math wouldn't work anyway. Because the varin family is two carbons lighter, the weights are different. THCVA weighs about 330 and THCV about 286, which gives a conversion factor closer to 0.867 than 0.877. Small difference, but it shows these are genuinely separate compounds rather than variations on a theme.
The takeaway for shopping: if you see THCVA on a report, it's extra information, not hidden potency. It isn't secretly boosting the number on the front of the package, and it isn't being left out of it either.
Where Does THCVA Come From?
THCVA is produced by the cannabis plant itself, but only some cannabis makes much of it.
Varin cannabinoids have been most associated with landrace genetics from central Asia and southern Africa. Research going back decades found higher varin content in cultivars from those regions than in most of what's commercially grown today. THCV itself was being studied as far back as 1942.
Modern commercial cannabis has largely been bred for THC content, which means the varin line has mostly been bred out or left behind. A few breeders are now working deliberately toward higher-varin cultivars, but they remain uncommon.
So if you don't see THCVA on your lab report, that's completely normal. Most products don't have a detectable amount.
What the Research Actually Says

Research on THCV exists but is early. Most of it is laboratory or animal work. There's a small amount of human research. It's the sort of evidence base that supports "this is worth studying further," not "this does the following things for you."

What isn't established is a long list, and it includes most of what gets claimed online.

THCVA's molecular formula is C20H26O4, weighing about 330 grams per mole. When heated it loses a carboxyl group as carbon dioxide and becomes THCV, formula C19H26O2, weighing about 286.
Compare that to the familiar pair: THCA is C22H30O4 at about 358, and THC is C21H30O2 at about 314. Line them up and the pattern is clear. The varin versions are exactly two carbons and four hydrogens lighter. That's the shortened tail.
Where does that tail come from? Cannabis builds cannabinoids by joining two pieces together. The five-carbon family uses a starting compound called olivetolic acid. The varin family uses divarinolic acid instead, which is the same idea with a shorter chain. Swap that one ingredient and everything downstream comes out as a varin.
It's a good illustration of how modular plant chemistry is. One substitution early in the process produces a whole parallel family of compounds.
What Happens to THCVA When You Smoke or Vape
THCVA converts to THCV with heat, and that conversion starts happening well before combustion temperatures.
