However, the modern form wasn’t introduced until the 1960s when Herbert Gilbert patented the ‘Smokeless,’ which contained a liquid that was heated by a battery-powered device and ultimately vaporized for inhalation — just as we use today.

 

Though Herbert Gilbert created the modern form, only time could truly tell where his invention would eventually lead. Given the popularity of vapes, it’s no surprise that vaping culture has reinvigorated the cannabis vape market in recent years; however, before this introduction gets too far into another stoner school history lesson, let’s jump into the different types of vapes.

 

Tabletop Vaporizers 

 

Remember how we alluded to the fact that vapes are portable, stating that they allow you to enjoy the benefits anytime, anywhere? Well, tabletop vaporizers are the exception. 

 

As the name suggests, tabletop vaporizers require a flat surface in order to use them — such as… a tabletop. They are sold in a variety of different bodies and forms that all feature a temperature dial, a mouthpiece attachment, a heating element, and a heating chamber. Keep in mind that tabletop vaporizers are most commonly used to vape flower versus oil or concentrates. 

 

Portable Vaporizers

 

Portable vaporizers are extremely similar in concept to tabletop vaporizers; however, they’re—you guessed it—portable! They operate in a relatively similar way, featuring a chamber to hold the flower, a heating element, and of course a battery; additionally, most include a temperature control feature that may be a simple button or a small temperature dial similar to that of a tabletop vaporizer. 

 

Portable vaporizers come in a variety of options with some only allowing for the vaporization of dry flower, some that are best suited for different types of concentrates, and some that are created to be a hybrid of the two — allowing you to choose whether you want to vape flower or concentrates using a single device. 

 

Cannabis Vape Pens

 

You’re probably already familiar with vape pens. They’re those small devices that may or may not feature a button to inhale, and have become especially popular and mainstream in recent years; those handheld pens that we all know and love, and the devices that your friends are always carrying around and you may steal a puff or two from time to time.

 

Vape pens, weed pens, dab pens, hash oil pens… these are all terms that refer to vape pens in general; however, the name chosen often refers to the type of vape pen. 

 

Reusable vape pens require a battery and a pre-filled cartridge or pod that you exchange once emptied. Batteries come in a variety of different shapes and sizes ranging from a cylindrical form that resembles a traditional writing pen, to a flat shape that resembles the disposable nicotine vapes commonly found in smoke shops. Whichever size or shape you prefer, all solo batteries require a cartridge or pod that contains cannabis oil with concentrated amounts of cannabinoids and terpenes. 

 

You also have all-in-one disposable vapes that are a one-time-use sort of device. They contain all of the traditional elements featured in reusable pens, but the entire device needs to be repurchased each time. 

 

A huge benefit of vape pens is that they allow for precise temperature control. Keep in mind that a lower temperature typically ranging from 325-350 degrees produces the best flavor but a milder high, while high temperatures ranging from 400-430 degrees create a hotter, less flavorful experience with stronger effects. We typically recommend opting for the in–between range of 350-400 degrees because you still taste the terpenes and cannabinoids without sacrificing the high. 

 

The Pros & Cons of Cannabis Vapes
